Oh god this scene is a powerful scene.
For me The Thing is one of the most powerful horror films ever made. It just gets everything right.
John Carpenter has been a bit hit and miss over the years. I never liked They Live or Into the Mouth of Madness. Just a bit rubbish.
But Halloween and The Thing stand out as perfect horror.
Anyone who has seen The Thing will know all about the sequence in the movie where each remaining member of the team gives some blood.
The theory is that anything living will flee from heat. Possibly a nod to Ash's comment in Alien in that any living thing will flee from fire.
Whatever, it matters not.
The tension that this presents as each remaining member of the ice station crew awaits their fate is pretty tangible.
One by one they're given the all clear and then.. BAM! The unlucky 'alien' is exposed and quickly transforms.
The effects (created by industry veteran Rob Bottin and assisted by Stan Winston are staggeringly visceral and to the feint hearted, quite disgusting.
But the real star of the sequence is the final sentence:
"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!"
